I enjoy your little stories the hilarious search for toilet tissue and the frustration at teaching your children at home. Your written descriptions will be vital for future historians, studying how ordinary people reacted during the pandemic.

Whatever the reason, I hope you will continue to write even after this pandemic ends. Your letters always make me feel special and let me know that you value our friendship. Warmly, C. I suspect much of this disappointment came from backyard growers creating large gardens with little experience to maintain them through the long growing season. Allow me to share a few words of semi-wisdom for those of you who have little gardening experience or limited growing space.

As long as I keep planters relatively small 2- to 5-gallon containers is a good range in sizes I can move heat-seeking edibles like peppers, chives, basil, mint and thyme into the sun when shade invades their growing space during the day.

I can also slip such cool-season crops as lettuce, spinach and radishes to shadier spots during the heat of the afternoon to extend their harvest into possibly the early summer.

Buy ornate or colorful planters for visual aesthetics, if it fits your fancy, but old buckets, small office trash cans, wooden crates anything that can hold dirt through at least one growing season will do. Just drill or cut plenty of holes in the bottoms for drainage.

Use quality commercial potting soil for growing plants in containers. Cheap bags of common garden dirt will usually result in a mucky, unproductive mess. Want an even bigger potted garden?

This user-friendly width will ease your reach into beds, preventing foot traffic from compacting the soil as well as minimizing embarrassing faceplants in the dirt.

To maximize garden areas no matter how limited create beds instead. This simple step turns many walking paths between rows into usable growing ground. What makes a garden bed work more efficiently is the trick of only using spacing recommendations per plant and forgetting about suggested distances between rows. This scrunches plants closer together, but not enough to create competition for ground nutrients and lower production potential.

Traditional colonial rectangles probably come to mind when garden beds for vegetables or herbs are mentioned; but, hey, this is the 21st century, and anything goes. This means degree angles can be replaced by imaginative curves, swerves, bends or bows to fit better into a landscape layout, if necessary. Even compact versions of typically rangy, viny veggies such as green beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, squash and cantaloupes can be easily found.

However, vegetable plant breeders, aware of this problem, have been busy developing smaller versions of standard plants that still have plenty of spunk to crank out decent crops. Probably the best example of little plants yielding big results is the tomato. Keep in mind that most patio tomatoes are determinate, meaning they will produce all their crop over a stretch of a few weeks, rather than through the entire growing season.

Some small okra selections also deliver big. Instead, cage or trellis them, so the vines will grow up, not out. Have a fence? You also have a perfect support for vining veggies.

While training cucumbers and squash vines up supports is nothing new, suspending large watermelons and pumpkins does seem problematic. However, there are watermelon cultivars .

Lifting these plants off the ground will increase. Although they are smaller, miniature pumpkins and watermelons will still put strain on their vines if they are trained up a support.

This problem can be solved by hanging cloth or nylon slings off the supports and cradling the yummiesto-be as they mature. Herbs can also step up when you need more eyecatching plants in ornamental beds.

One of my well-worn mantras is that many growable edibles are very pretty plants. To save space, why not break out of this classic confine, and start showing them off in flower beds and perennial borders? Tip Be safe when mixing edibles with ornamentals.

If you use pesticides in flower beds, make sure they are cleared for use on vegetables and herbs too. What are the advantages She and her staff have a reputation for of the new location? Campbell herself is also known for her hazard for our customers, with impatient many acts of generosity, like giving away drivers blowing horns and squealing their Easter lilies last spring when area churches brakes.

The current spot is a more rural setting. This vision also helps our wholesale customers locate plants for their special plantings. What has been the best thing about owning the business? I knew when I found out that the previous owner was selling the business, that I would have to purchase it. One of my biggest rewards from all of my labor of growing flowers is when I can give them away to my church, Cary Presbyterian, schools in the nearby area, children who come in with their parents, and to my friends.

I knew if I did not own the business, I could not afford to purchase all of the plants that I would like to give to people. What has been the biggest challenge as a small-business owner? My challenge has been and continues to be knowing when to stand back and take a deep breath. There are also challenges with finding employees, although I have been fortunate to. In the foreground, the perennial Lenten rose or hellebore is in full bloom.

Interest in growing food seems to be increasing. How have you responded? Food crop production is a small part of the wholesale division, however more of our landscape customers are installing gardens for their customers. We have shifted our resources to meet the interest of our retail customers and are offering a wide variety of vegetables, especially for the spring crop. Food crops are much more time-concentrated compared to ornamental crops. Workers move pansies and violas out of the greenhouse, ready for retail customers eager for a bit of color in their yard.

At the end of the day, it is quiet at the nursery and I can walk, watch the bluebirds and enjoy seeing the fruits of all our labor. There is a balance between malt and hops that affects the flavor experience of beer. All beers have hops, but you may not really taste them.

IPAs and other hop-forward beer styles are meant to spotlight hops with hop flavor, aroma and bitterness. Other styles use the hop bitterness to balance the malt, sparing you from imbibing a dull and very malty sweet liquid.

This style of beer pairs really well with seafood and shellfish. This is a great example of a beer that complements the food a light beer with the light flavors of the fish. The two balance each other and is a win-win for your palate! At the Fuquay location you can enjoy not just the beer and food pairing above, but a lot more you can discover for yourself.

IN THE WIDE, wide world of plant selection appellations, rare is the occasion when two names are not only the same but are also tagged to top-tier introductions quite capable of adding dependable, elegant interest to any garden setting. Both have the pleasing potential of being eye-catching additions to your garden this spring.

Wisteria gets a bad rap for being invasive. There is another kinder, gentler wisteria: Wisteria frutescens, which is actually native to the Southeast. Commonly called American wisteria, it can stretch to lengths of 15 feet plus, but this is modest compared to the apocalyptic swaths of the Asian imports.

In addition, it is sterile, meaning no weedy seedlings will invade your landscape. To many gardeners, when it comes to eye candy, oregano is generally considered a cute herb but not necessarily pretty.

His website is www. Reblogging with this information again because a lot of people are asking.

She volunteers, speaks at rally's and protests etc. The list goes on. Do your homework before you post about someone you don't know. She is literally already doing the job of Miss Texas. She educates, informs, and inspires her community to be innovative leaders.

Don't want to spoil this convo for every else. Social media is important in many ways. We can also agree that it's going to take more than a girl who is well versed in social media to do the job of Miss Texas! To the original post of wanting to eliminate her because she's an "influencer" shouldn't be an option. If you really want to even the playing field, force all titleholders to delete their social media accounts. While there is strong competition from some out-of-state gals, Miss South Central Sarah Dahdouh and Miss Milwaukee Angelica Niemann, historically Wisconsin has a record of only crowning girls who are actually from Wisconsin.

This could certainly change, but there have been years where out-of-state contestants have scored lower than I thought they should.

But want? Barmes would do well and the other three are just good girls who have stuck with the state. She has great enthusiasm and would be a great rep for the state. She needs a great stylist to help with the little things including hair and makeup. Beauty still counts. It's not the most important thing but it can be a tie breaker. She would get booked just because broadcasters would like to say her name. That would also be a great name for a weatherperson.

Forgot how to spell meteor I have followed her on socials since her USA days. Have we ever had a teacher as Miss America? Subject: Since we went over darkhorses, who do you think is going to win your state?? And hope so. Not one real frontrunner in my opinion and there are others who have been preparing hard for this. Many great women have aged out without winning.

Prob just a coincidence. The most recent win by an age-out before then was in She was 1st runner up to Shivali last year. Since Stephanie has moved to Volunteer, my money is on Hannah. If a woman did well because swim suit is her strength, and, let's face it, there are A LOT of former Miss States who won on beauty.

Not saying these women aren't gorgeous, but they also have to be talented--really, truly, talented--and smart.

I think an incredible talent will win Miss America this year, simply in response to Camille. The two mentioned above made top 5 in both versions, maybe that bodes well. Laura Hancock is the right age, but she presents as being very artificial.

I think it could be Haley Wheeler, but of all of the states I have attended, Kentucky has far and away the least qualified judges. That has gotten even worse with the current leadership. They seem to pick random people off the street to judge. Haley Wheeler is probably the front runner.

She also extensively competed in the Miss Georgia system. NT -- She had impressive credentials. Franquiz is extremely active and does a lot of appearances. Something texas needs. You may not know her, but she was top 5 as a teen, and very well spoken. She may not be my winner, I can't see s clear winner just yet, but I do believe she'll be in the top 5. Mallory will do fine and so will Avery, do I think they'll make top 5 again, mehhhh, possibly.

Please open your eyes to the new and upcoming. No one has an answer to that good question. All they'll have to do is read every thing they can find and watch the news 24 hours a day.

Then be able to answer questions like a Jeopardy contestant, give a reading like Maya Angelou, and do a somewhat passable "act" onstage and they will win Miss America.

With her height and beauty, she could be Miss USA. Her talent is entertaining to non-musicians, but her repertoire and ability are limited. She speaks well enough. But the young lady is gorgeous and would make a tremendous impression on the USA stage if her swimsuit is up to par.

It will be Emma or Vivian. I watched her Takeover of the Miss NC Instagram, and she was good, but doesn't seem to understand the job. She constantly referred to the "pageant". That's a big No No Westbrook and Rowdy are barely in college. I think they both have a bunch of potential but need maturity, and just life experience. I see a college grad winning, has a "real" career started, grad school.

A grown woman with a plan. Our current Miss NC is a grad and her 2 years of service have been quite unforgettable. Alex was and is a wonderful Miss NC. Big shoes to fill. I'm curious. Her amazing talent. Her stunning physique.

I think it will go to Lauren Bradford. She was teen first runner up to Jessica Baeder and accepting the teen position as Jessica won the national pageant.

Maybe Annika S. Or Bree B. I think she will be top five along with Charity Bowden and Lauren Bradford. Subject: Candidate order for Miss Connecticut Competition. Rarely have I heard a better singing voice.

NT -- However, she's a plus sized woman so knows. NT I had asked in my reply why the date and location was not mentioned with the original posting of these state contestants for ? Can't find it now but wondering if anyone could post it here?

If they waited until June or July more ppl could have been vaccinated? I'd love to hear her version. We have two girls in our state who "trade off" singing that song. I do remember that it got a boatload of hits and favorable comments including as I recall from Miss Oklahoma Trelynda Kerr.

What is her talent? However she had a different last name- I don't know if she changed her name or what but I think it's the same person. She's very short, a little overweight not that that makes any difference these days and she has a pretty good singing voice but nothing great. Only a couple of those contestants are a total package. So perfectly 2. We had a past winner whose platform was entirely created from an old archaic belief that no longer existed in the medical community.

She talked a good game. She won strictly on how she sold it. Rather than just post facts and statistics, I would like to see someone who has actually dedicated time to their issue. I also feel like sometimes the issues of concern are very vague. There was an award of substantial amount to be given to the winner.

I called and checked the references and asked about the direct impact of the winner and runnersup to be sure that it wasnt made up. The winner actually received a scholarship of a certain dollar amount AND a full ride to a university. NT -- Definitely check the references.

Some new girls and I don't know anything about their speaking ability , talent, or any other accomplishments. Even though people hated the Christmas date of Miss America they loved the venue. Tons of places to eat, everyone is in the same location so you see each other, rather than being split up all over the boardwalk, and great for day trips.

Hard to say. Many new contestants. Darn it! The latter has been in either the OT or Miss pageants combined at least 10 years if I am not mistaken. I can't narrow it down to two at this point. I look at accomplishments, speaking ability, and who I can see doing the very best at the job. One was held last July. Shouldn't we look at what categories that state used? MAO has no clue for what direction to give.

Next year the girls will roll around on stage in gown like last year. CT should throw a good old fashioned pageant with gown and swimsuit and see what MAO does about it.

What would MAO do? How did she do there? That takes away money for scholarship. Are any states streaming - legally? NT -- what's her talent? MA eliminated certain songs to avoid those charges, and I'm sure will again, so if girls chose free songs they're go to go. Did the same type of dance that Nina D did to win Miss America.

I don't know what it's like 6 years later. It's on Instagram under MissMilford I thought she was fabulous. BUT I must say I think she's extraordinary.

Even with this video taken from a phone, you can see how talented she is. So sad to hear this. Loved her rendition of "You and I" at Miss America. Last saw her about 10 years ago and she looked like she was maybe 5 years out of pageants.

Very sweet and warm personality. Such a shock because she seemed ageless. If it isn't too intrusive, does anyone know if this was sudden or if she had an extended illness.

She was probably in her mid to late 60's, I would assume. Assuming she was in her 20s, I would guess she would be between 66 - That's still pretty young by today's standards. I think she was She was still quite young. Really beautiful person. So sad. Prayers to her family. Is there not an official obituary for Susan Lawrence Googe? She will be missed. Subject: Tuesday Quotations. This talent I shared not as a gift but as an expression of friendship and love.

Heaven only knows. NT -- Good work. Subject: Miss Louisiana Faith Jenkins Was this top 5 a controversial one? Did you see the way Jenkins reacted? Shelley Colvin was probably trying to move away in fear of getting hurt.

Like she had an out of body experience. Faith certainly spruced up before AC. Just looking at that years Top 5, you would never pick the winner. They did a lot of Jesus at pageants in the South.

The last black Miss Louisiana was in -Nita Whitaker. Faith did not win any prelims either at state. Shelly was just stunning and it was her last year. That makes things really much harder. But, Faith had substance which is why she won. And clearly she did great at Miss America.

I believe Miss Maine sang it the next year at Miss America. This is also the first pageant I've witnessed where all 10 semi-finalists were vocalists. Not taking anything away from the winner but that look is always so sad. Subject: Changed the most. Haven't watched it the past 2 years. Author: obsessedpageantfan [ Edit View ]. I'm looking for Camille or Nia.

If you have Nina's interview, I would love to see it. Subject: American Idol. Author: Fan [ Edit View ]. I don't follow this show closely, but last Sunday I watched to hear his performance but never saw him. Of course, not all of the singers are featured on every American Idol episode, but is he still in the contest?

He is 16 years old and from rural NC. He is no longer on the show. His name is Presley Barker. Don't know anything else. I had never heard of it, but wow, it is on par with Miss Universe. USA won, but Guatemala was across the board the winner. A three-way tie for the winner and that had to be broken with one more question. Find it on Facebook. And to add, Nick Verreos reviewed the fashions.

Subject: Titleholder Professions. Does your state make your candidate quit her job after winning the state title? Most of ours were still in school. Last one not in school had just graduated and is a teacher. Very unfortunate. I've heard that the state winner in Texas only has 40 minutes to review the entire contract before she actually has to sign it.

She then proceeds to a dinner reception. I know only a few Texas titleholders who fought to stay in school or keep their job. Isn't there another festival queen going Taste of Charlotte or something like that? I hope it is someone we never saw coming. Last year was so predictable that it wasn't even a good show. Charlotte appointed the 1st ru. No sweeps this year.

They crowned the Sweeps winners that are competing this year in March of Sadly, no top15 They also lost Fayetteville, hopefully just temporarily Miss Fayetteville that normally goes to Miss NC took a year off to reorganize. Where was Mountain Glory held? Was it a sweeps title. NC seems to have a lot of preliminaries that spring up and just last a year or so. Subject: Calendar for State Competions.

Can anyone post a video of the finals? I remember who won, but I'd love to see the competition itself. Someone post half the finals- the first half, but is gone. Subject: Do you think the new Miss America will make any appearances anywhere?? It would be nice to see Camille on a morning show or late night show?? An award show or a parade.

She could do a science experiment?? That ship has sailed - Camille is no longer under contract with MAO. Because of this virus thing, she had the misfortune of having the suckiest year ever as Miss America. There were no appearances because nothing was happening.

I would have had Camille in every living room in the country in virtual classes. Parents were desperate for anything to include in virtual sessions. They really could have made her relevant. Like all the other Miss Americas, she is moving on with her life, as she should. It's on the MAO social media.

If they are smart they will make sure they crown a girl who is beautiful and who also has connections of her own. Author: curious [ Edit View ]. Mary Zilba OH '87 not making top 10; calling a press conference The southern girls were sort of their own clique and acted stand-off'ish with some of the contestants from smaller states. So our girl bonded with the other smaller state reps. Fast forward to Atlantic City and our rep wins a prelim the first night of competition.

Suddenly, the Southern Girls saw her as a threat and started giving her daggers, and the small state reps she was close with at Disney were still friendly but were pulling away as she continued to have a good week.

She said it was the oddest dynamic and no one prepared her for it, and our State hadn't made the Top 10 in several years and non of our formers knew to tip her off to the competition week dynamics.

Same with comments about the smaller states, here online. This also happens at MU, where Hispanic countries are somewhat cold to non-Hispanics. It is very noticeable as names are called during eliminations.. NT -- I'm aboard with the notion that MA is chosen even before the telecast. I remember our Miss State joking about how she felt so spoiled because they all entered the rides via the secret VIP entrances.

This perk was during the ABC broadcast years. Heather French's year the girls all went to Disney first before AC! NT -- My girl knew as soon as she saw Heather that she was the competition. Leanza's year the contestants still started in Philadelphia and rode the train over to Atlantic City.

It was a year or two after that when it was switched to Orlando and Disney. Subject: Anyone noticed Camille has set up her own website and none of her bookings are going through MAO? Her contract was up. Now's the time to hire an agent. MAO did nothing for her, not that they could have but their support of Miss America has been waning for years and this was the worst.

I don't even know why anyone would compete for this at this point. Pandemic or not. Miss A no Cheap Boat Rides In Cape Town Co longer has a booking manager like in the past. Nia and Camille are doing their own bookings. Long gone are the days of seeing Miss A on any kind of red carpet events. Nia sat in a hotel room, called in as many favors as she could, Camille hired a PR person which was smart. This is why now Miss A is platform driven, that is what her appearances will consist of from now on!

And Miss America doesn't? She relies on people and organizations coming to her, instead of creating meaningful partnerships. She passed her work off on other employees and it was obvious she would prefer to be at the events instead of working on details. I felt terrible that she was painted with that brush, but the organization has really slipped.

I had a number of people tell me, when I recalled this story, that the booking manager was drunk in public several times at last years pageant and the other employees were exasperated with her lack of organization and creativity in booking. Its too bad the board doesn't see it. Problem is people in charge don't know what they don't know.

If it were me, I would let them know by writing them a letter so its in writing. Too often, its people who have the heart for the program, but no qualifications. A booking manager should not be someone who simply responds to email inquiries as they come in. They should be actively reaching out to relevant and appropriate orgs to build connections and partnerships.

Until we start finding folks who understand marketing, or at least train them to, girls at every level will have to fend for themselves. The ones with money and connections will do fine, but the rest will be very disappointed. Miss America definitely has a business manager.

NT -- Now she can try to get appearances just like any other former. We're discussing booking managers. If they are indeed a booking manager, there is no need for that position, since there is no MA under contract. They'd see a different picture and a different Rainbow. Would be a different experience. They'd be amazingly surprised. There may be a few appearances like the NFL thing but long gone are any connections to meaningful appearances.

And long gone is 20, a month. The days of pageant queens as celebrities have disappeared with reality tv and influencers. NT -- Ted talks are not relevant.

NYE, red carpet, lots of tie in appearances. Same with CMNH, after the Sam debacle all of that was destroyed and the new management - and management after - did nothing. CMNH gave them 10 appearances and the rest were due to the booking mgr.. They're the highlight of her year, giving her access a state or local titleholder couldn't get. You need a dynamic woman and a solid staff and brand. It is declining due to society too.

People are suffering and pageants do not play well into this time period. NT -- And influencers are really something the younger generation looks at. They did not embrace social media fast enough.. Savvy knew how to use social media.. MAO missed the boat when they decided that talent no longer mattered in the final decision, as the popularity of amateur talent shows like "American Idol" and "AGT" exploded in popularity.

MAO, in it's never ending quest to show its relevancy decided to go the social justice warrior route and people yawned and tuned out. Somewhere along the line, MAO was so busy trying to appease its critics that it lost sight of what the American Public would respond to.

We had amateur talent since Too bad MAO didn't use what it already had to catch the wave of amateur talent show popularity, because we'd be in a much better place today if we had. The direction MAO is going is not good. Sam was bad but he did have the connections and his staff knew their job. This has nothing to do with a pageant girl no longer being relevant, USA never has a problem making connections and getting booked.

All MAO needed to do was make some small tweaks but instead they threw the baby and the bath water out. We need Sharon Pierce. She is the only person who knows how and has the gumption and caring to get this organization back on track.

The opportunity is out there. Bring back Sharon!! She has class, an understanding of the program and is smart enough to bring about moderization correctly. And guess what she truly cares about the organization and is not about making herself "the star".

At the very least they should put her on the board. Bring back Sharon! After Sam fired her, the organization declined. She is who should have been brought in to take over after Sam left. This pageant would be in a much better place if that had happened. She is still in AC and was working for Hard Rock and doing a great job. Agreed with her choice at the time, but I would love for her to be running the organization now.

Not to mention at that time Sam had Josh and Brent as his sidekicks. Happens all the time. She was at SFA in Texas today, wearing the crown for photos. So she is still the titleholder or she couldn't wear the crown, right?

If she were still under contract with MAO, she would not have her own website for speaking gigs. You're right; we don't "go along with that. Subject: A Topic that is never really discussed and usually just mentioned in passing is the Bullying that goes on especially in High School for Girls that enter Pageants.

Many Pageant Contestants talk about bullying but it for some reason never is paid attention to, it is almost like how can some beautiful Teen get bullied at school??? What is the answer is their an answer, I think this hurts recruitment in many ways, that the National Organization does not address. You are exactly right. That type of bullying is never mentioned.

And it's not just young women who participate in pageants. Although that's the worst it's anybody who had an interest in pageants is made fun of and ridiculed even if they're adults.. Wear your crowns proudly, Queens! Sorry not sorry, but that is the bottom line. Wearing their crown and posting about it constantly is just inviting jealousy. I saw let them eat cake. It's just a bunch of big ol' country girls that can't get a date to save their life.

I say, give me five minutes with 'em. NT -- Suzanne Sugarbaker Miss Georgia World and lover of all crowns, big and small. This is a responsibility adults should educate the public about. We know the basics: Bullies are very insecure; probably a learned behavior from home or entertainment; they are not only insecure but usually have to have back-up for their bullying.

It not the fault of those who are bullied. Understanding is a key coping mechanism. NT -- Finally, have the kids join a beginner's class in self-defense! Even beat me up a couple of times. He was 2 years older and my parents went to see the uneffective school principal and he did absolutely nothing. One day I had had enough.

This cretin informed me that he was going to beat me up when I got off the bus. I just happened to have an empty Coke bottle in my backpack. One well placed zonk on his forehead was enough to make him reconsider.
