The end result is a lightweight pound canoe thats perfect for moving faster for longer stretches of water than some others out there. This is a skin-on-frame style canoe, so it may not be right for everyone. If you prefer a wood strip style canoe instead, these plans arent really able to be modified to work for what you need. 4. Small canoes are also easier to mount and carry as it is moved place to place. Small canoes usually weigh about pounds. Again outliers are possible. Small canoes can weigh anywhere from 20 pounds to 80 pounds. This plays a huge role in how transportable a canoe can be. A canoe that weighs less is easier to lift and maneuver.

Additionally weight is stripped using lightweight fibreglass on the bottom, use of selected lightweight timbers for the trim and those really cool lightweight seats.

A boat built to the normal specifications tends to come in a bit over the 43lb mark. Reports of the first Eureka wooden canoe show it to be much easier to paddle than the usual plywood canoe, and indeed much better than most production glass hulls. In Lightweight Plywood Canoe Joint effect greatly reducing the effort required from the paddlers when covering longer distance. The other major bit of feedback is on the appearance the EUREKA is a very handsome lightweight canoe quite unusual for the average plywood boatbuilding project.

The Eureka is a nice classic canoe For a simpler cheaper canoe look at our Quick Canoe. Several Canoes?

Michael, Thanks for the offer to e-mail the drawing. Do you have a midship cross section drawing for the Eureka ? I find that with stitch and glue construction, a midship building jig simplifies the whole process of avoiding twist. Even if you can provide the top plank angle from vertical, I can work out the jig shape.

Thank you for the new resources. I am way better at visual things than at at reading text. Cheers, Ian. More like 37 pages with 15 photos, 29 illustrations by an artist friend. To tell you the truth though, People do look in plans different ways so sometimes a plan can work for most but be more difficult for some to follow.

I try to cater for that by updating the plans when there are concerns. I put it first because it is so clear. Building the Quick Canoe. And here is the Eureka build specifically by Daniel in Uruguay.

And a Eureka Canoe build in Hungary. Building the eureka canoe slideshow. Hi, I just bought the Eureka plan. Perhaps you have a good video tutorial to suggest as the plan is not very beginner friendly. Also, you could have put the drawings on top of the plan so we can understand what you are talking about. It is a lower density than Western Red Cedar the previous best choice for lightweight timberwork. The Paulownia is perhaps a bit less dent resistant than the cedar so they made the decision to use Cedar for the external gunwale. Scantlings were pushed toward the minimum with a list of sizings that I thought would be OK in light of the Balsa Canoe project.

The big thing I had learned there was that the conventional sizings are much bigger than needed at least for flat water use. Diagram below shows gunwales and inwales being clamped in place detail from plan. Gunwale could go down to about 22 x 15 with the long edge horizontal. Inwale could go down to 10 x 20 with the long axis vertical. Inwale spacers are the actual key to the stiffness of the sheer structure Lightweight Plywood Canoe Ii so they could be widened to move the inwale further in toward the centreline the spacing between them could be extended slightly.

Another great idea was the way the seats were made simply by Gluing 6mm ply to the top of the seat frame and drilling holes to weave some cheap washing line cord through the holes. And saves more weight over plywood seats. The builders noted too that this style of seat keeps the paddler firmly in position even when the boat is heeled or is bouncing around in waves. Please find attached the latest progress pics below.

Actually we have also filled the outside seams. At this point in time the boat weighs 8. Rigidity seems fine. No more flex in any panel than would be expected on a good quality glass boat. The builders ended up taking their new boat for a short paddle a few weeks later, and then life intervened and they ended up being too busy to hit the water for some time.

Then this . Hi Michael, Finally a chance to go paddling in the Eureka. This week we have done 3 X 10km and 1X 8km paddles. On both river and lake.

Mostly calm conditions, just a little wind on the lake on one occasion. It seems very stable but we can see where inexperienced people could get caught out. Because of the chine the boat has several stable positions of heel. It is very happy to sit on the chine between the base and bilge boards. This is probably about 15 degrees of heel. To some people this may cause them to abandon ship. Also a thought re the comments on the forum. With the straight ply bench seat as per the plans, once the boat heeled the occupants backside will slip to the lower side thereby causing a capsize.

In most paddling boats foam is stuck to the seats for the dual purpose of comfort and keeping the bum from slipping. You can move around in the Eureka with no problems. Directional stability is OK for the boat that it is. It has a fair amount of rocker so it is easy to manoeuvre so obviously not the most directionally stable boat but the compromise works well. Again beginners may have trouble going straight, but that will be the case in any canoe.
