Then a SeaRaydr also looked like it was rebuilt. Besides engine troubles we got jet drive issues, etc. Damn, they look like great fun, very light for towing, stylish, fast.
After some investigation with all the problems with many brands.. I said hell no. Did I make a mistake? Got a small jet boat you love with zero issues?

In some ways, they may be the boating equivalent of a cc sportbike in terms of the people who tend to buy them not a comment on you I shopped them for a while but on the typical owner who has one in the driveway with a FOR SALE sign on it.
They're flashy, potentially lots of fun and not really all that practical so boaters who would be given to fastidious maintenance are more likely drawn to a conventional boat with a wider range of capabilities at comparable or less cost. The older Yamahas and Sea Doos typically use a pair of PWC engines, easy enough to maintain and plenty reliable if you aren't stupid. The Merc powered ones tend to be slow and unreliable.
Most older ones have very little freeboard or deadrise so smooth water use only really. I'd just get a PWC, but if you really want a small, very sporty boat looked for an Exciter cheap, fast, reliable.

They have oil in the gearbox and around the stator so really no biggie for normal service. If you can change an outboards gear oil you can do a jet. As for fuel, yep they can burn it but look how they get driven compared to a traditional boat, lots of hard cornering, full throttle, on and off throttle. Drive anything like that and it's a gas hog, drive it like most people drive a traditional boat, steady cruise without too much fucking around and it will be comparable.

Keeping fuel in the tank was abitch though. Had a30 gallon tank that would last as little as 2 hours or all day depending on how I felt. When I was working at a marina back in highschool we had many people all gung-ho on them. Usually after a test drive with the family they settled on something else. I think there were numbers of people who looked at the weight and thought they could trailer them behind a car or light SUV. There are much better toys. I had a Sea-Doo Challenger-X for a while. Had the Optimax in it, so it was quick AND fast. Sucked fuel pretty bad, but you're playing on the lake so get the thing that trips your trigger.
That said, I came to hate mine simply because of what's already mentioned As in, it don't. Reverse isn't really reverse because the engine is direct drive to the impeller so it CAN'T reverse. It drops a bucket down in front of the stream which WILL make you go backward, but very slowly and the steering works backward from a normal prop driven boat.
Very difficult to get used to, and I can back a trailer in places people think can't even be done. It wasn't me. And even forward handling with no throttle is spotty at best. Basically, getting on and off the trailer or working in and out of a dock both suck rocks. But if you want ONE boat, everything is a compromise, honestly. I ended up getting a bigger deck boat, and it's sluggish enough that it bugs me, too.
You're not going to enjoy fishing from a jet boat, that's for sure. But if you want to play with going fast, turning hard, and doing it with six friends on it all while towing some annoying buddy and trying to kill him in the process, well, the jet boat is hard to beat. I don't think reliability is any more of a problem with them than any other boat, honestly.
