Fiberglass Fuel Tank diesel Construction Project. Thread Tools. Senior Member. Received 8 Likes on 8 Posts. Thought I'd share my latest project. Sprung a one off fiberglass boat construction project in my one off fiberglass boat construction project fuel tank last Summer.

Tanks are aluminum and were installed about 12 years ago. I'll have one off fiberglass boat construction project cut the deck to replace and one off fiberglass boat construction project want to ever have to do that again so I decided to go with fiberglass tanks. Spoke with a finisher that built boats for a few friends up in Maine and followed his advice. Vinylester resin is preferred over poly or epoxy so that's what I used.

Layup schedule was 2 layers of 1. The tank bottom and sides was laid up on a male mold I constructed out of MDF. The lid top of tank and baffles were laid up on a table I made out of 2x4s and melamine. On the lid, I was able to accomplish all 10 layers of glass in 2 sessions.

I got the baffles done in 1 session. I would guess the lid and baffles came out a little thinner since I was able to minimize resin between layers plus I was working on a flat surface where I could really bear down on the roller between layers.

So far, I've used about 11 gallons of vinylester. Still have to one off fiberglass boat construction project baffles and lid into tank so I figure on a few more gallons before all is said and. I made each piece a little oversize and will trim off excess so theres a bit of waste.

Experience has taught me that edges of large fabrications can get a little ragged during layup so that was the biggest reason for going a little oversize - I wanted a consistent layup on the entire. And I'm glad I did cause that's exactly what happened. Male mold upside down: Angle strips to hold panels. Male mold right side up: Mold with corners routed, seams filled with modeling clay, seams taped with shipping tape, 4 or 5 coats of wax and 3 coats of PVA everything below black line will be trimmed off : Glass layers cut, prepping for one off fiberglass boat construction project First few layers of glass: Tank with mold removed.

Scaly look inside tank is PVA not yet removed - washed right out with water: Layup table for baffles and lid - upside. Melamine with 2x4s to keep table flat. Lid and baffles laid up:.

I beefed these up with additional strips of 1. All one off fiberglass boat construction project seams overlapped from layer to layer. Baffles will be glassed in. Plan One Off Fiberglass Boat Construction Effect for tank-to-lid and baffle-to-lid connection is to layup 2" x 2" strips of angle already have molds that will be glassed around inside of open end of tank and across baffles.

Then, lay a few layers of 1. Tank dimensions are 74 inches long x 16 inches high on one side x 13 inches high on other side to more or less match deadrise of hull x 20 inches wide. If my math was correct, this should yield around 90 gallons capacity.

The tank I've laid up is for Port. For Stbd side, I'll use same mold one off fiberglass boat construction project rotate tank degrees end to end. I'll try to get some pictures of fill, vent, pickup and return accommodations soon. Baffles glassed in.

You can use a tap in FG, no problem. Just build the area up thick in the area and know that the threads will be easier to strip than in metal.

I'm not even sure how I'd accomplish the tap with a long tube in the first place. I had to shelve this project for a little bit. I'm very close to being done but other things got in the way.

I'll seal the plates with The builder I've been consulting with has been doing it this way for years with no problem. I hope to get back on this project within the next week or so and will update with pics.

Yea, second that about tigging the fittings to a SS plate, then screwing that to tank. Probably the way I would roll. Originally Posted by Fletch. I suggest you research the suitability of 3M in a fuel system, I wouldn't use it.
