Fiberglass Fuel Tank diesel Construction Project. Thread Tools. Senior Member. Received 8 Likes on 8 Posts. Thought I'd share my latest project. Sprung a one off fiberglass boat construction project in my one off fiberglass boat construction project fuel tank last Summer.

Tanks are aluminum and were installed about 12 years ago. Spoke with a finisher that built boats for a few friends up in Maine and followed his advice. Vinylester resin is preferred over poly or epoxy so that's what I used.

Layup schedule was 2 layers of 1. The tank bottom and sides was laid up on a male mold I constructed out of MDF. The lid top of tank and baffles were laid up on a table I made out of 2x4s and melamine. On the lid, I was able to accomplish all 10 layers of glass in 2 sessions.

I got the baffles done in 1 session. I would guess the lid and baffles came out a little thinner since I was able to minimize resin between layers plus I was working on a flat surface where I could really bear down on the roller between layers.

So far, I've used about 11 gallons of vinylester. Still have to one off fiberglass boat construction project baffles and lid into tank so I figure on a few more gallons before all is said and. I made each piece a little oversize and will trim off excess so theres a bit of waste.

Experience has taught me that edges of large fabrications can get a little ragged during layup so that was the biggest reason for going a little oversize - I wanted a consistent layup on the entire.
