Stitch-and-Glue Boatbuilding : Chris Kulczycki :
Stitch and glue is a simple boat building method which uses plywood panels stitched together, usually with copper wire, and glued together with epoxy resin. This type of construction can eliminate much of the need for frames or ribs. Plywood panels are cut to shape and stitched together to form an accurate hull shape without the need for forms or special tools. This technique is also called "tack and tape", or "stitch and tape". Seams are reinforced with fiberglass tape and thickened epoxy. The "Stitch and Glue" method of boat construction is one of the most popular methods of plywood boat construction today. It allows for easy test fits, fast assembly, and simple fixes. I recently modified the Mini-Cup Sailboat plans, normally calling for assembly with wooden stringers, to stitch and glue. I apologize for the lack of some crucial photos, as once the process is started and the gloves are on, the epoxy usually gets everywhere so I try to limit my camera's exposure to it. The third video in the how-to build a boat series covers the assembly of the hull using zip ties with the stitch and glue method. This construction method.

Stitch-and-glue boatbuilding may be the most popular method of amateur boatbuilding today. In this method the home builder cuts out marine plywood panels to prescribed shapes, then puts them together with wire stitches long enough to glue and seal the seams with epoxy.

Once the epoxy cures, the stitches are removed, and the result is a handsome, strong, watertight boat.
