Book explains processes well from snippets I have read with useful do's and don't's. Photos of workshop methods are so faint you have to guess what's being done. Was about to return because of that but changed mind due to clear explanation.

Cheap print job Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 June Images in this review. Report abuse. Excellent description of stitch and glue principles and techniques.

Mine is now battered and smudged from constant reference during my first build. Only criticism is that parts are now quite dated and it might benefit from a new edition at some point. There is a little dry humour in the text that certainly made me smile too. Enjoy the book and enjoy your own build s! Very dated and not really relevant to modern techniques zip ties , modern epoxies , but an interesting history of what it used to be like.

When starting on my boatbuilding journey I was primarily looking to build a plywood on frame boat, and as expected this method is the main focus the book covered in great detail. Many options for stems, chine logs, cabin sides and many other boat components are outlined and it would have been nice to see photos of more of them rather than just line drawings.

I guess the plywood on frame approach is used more for larger boats, but instead of concentrating the build photos on one model of motor boat I wish that either more shots of smaller boats, such as rowboats, sailboats, canoes and kayaks, had been included or that the title had been reworded. If building from plans, I would expect that a lot of the topics in this book, such the size and type of fasteners and some of the options of how to build certain parts, were included in the plans.

The presence of whole chapters on these in the book suggests that the builder might not be working from a plan but perhaps from lines taken off an existing boat or a home design. I was hoping for a been a bit more of info on what thicknesses of plywood and solid wood to choose for the planking, frames, gunwales and chine logs, etc.

I'm thinking all these would depend on the size, expected speed, and use of the boat, as well as on the size of the unsupported stretches of individual panels. Where will my 16" stich and glue rowboat built from 4 mm plywood need to be beefed up so that a Lb person stepping into it won't put a foot through the bottom or that it won't break apart while strapping it on the roof of the car?

Will 6 mm plywood still bend into the requried curves? One person found this helpful. It's a difficult read. More drawings would help to explain things better. There is also a lot of information, perhaps too much at times. Report abuse. I hope to begin building a Glen L boat in the next year. This book is very comprehensive in terms of topics discussed. The language is very accessible and easy to understand both in theory and in execution. I did find that most of the info is available online in forums and builders' webpages.

This book is convenient because it centralizes all the information.
