Can they be stored on a wall on the side of the kayak on L-brackets, if padded? Looking for input from my SS brethren. Thank you. I store mine on a cart that is on wheels with PVC bunks like what I have in the truck bed just a smaller version. The best way to store them is flat on the ground or have support running the length of the kayak.

I leaned my kayak up against the wall in my garage for a few days Diy Canoe Rack For Truck Oil to get my truck in and had it resting on 2 foam pads. There ended up being a dent where one of the pads was resting against the hull on its side.

It came out eventually but I make it a point to never store it on its side for an extended period of time or in any way that creates pressure points on the hull. Good video. I prefer to use the foam and carpet because it adds cushion so its not plastic to plastic , and also the carpet keeps the kayak from tearing up the foam.

Just my preference but I also see guys just use straight pvc without any issues that I know of. I just like a little extra protection to the kayak. Nice addition to the truck bed extender.

I just bought one and have had issues difficulty sliding the kayak onto it. Biggest problem with my Hobie Outback is the stern does not have a handle to lift it with. When picked up by the rudder or the bow the kayak starts to sway and go out of control. Still looking for solution to this. You could possibly make a small V-shaped cradle with PVC that you can set the bow or stern into while lifting one end to keep it from tipping over while loading and unloading.

Hi Tony, Can you set up 2 yaks on this? In addition, I left a question earlier about the supports. Are they held in place or loose using the weight of the kayak. Great Idea. The supports in the middle and at the end are attached. I have a 3 way connector in those areas connected to an elbow to make the supports.

Hey Tony good video. I love DIY stuff. I solved the whole transport issue. I bought a full size cargo van and turned it into my fishing van. My Hobie Revolution fits entirely in the van. Easy in and out, no need for straps. I have a rod rack in my van that holds four rods and some crates for various things.

I can even sleep in my van for an overnighter if I want. I can easily transport, load and unload my 12 foot kayak in my 6 foot Tacoma bed without needing an extender rack.

Great video! These will be rod lockers. Problem is, I had one canoe of our own, and a truck, but no canoe rack and didn't want to drive all the way to the river with a 15 foot canoe hanging out the back.

Commercially made racks for a pickup trucks can fit in a trailer hitch but this doesn't let you lower the tailgate or tow anything , they can fit in the post holes of a pickup sidewall but I have Chrome gunnels on my truck or they can be free standing.

This Instructable documents the process we went through to build our rack so other canoeing hackers can save Diy Pvc Canoe Rack For Truck Zoo money too! But first a little research - I had enough time to check out two other random designs before working on this project I found one rather deluxe design that is an entire 4 post structure in the bed of the truck. Though it is sturty and yet remove-able, We already had car-carrier pads, and thought this design would be more difficult to store, more costly and time consuming to build.

I also found this model built out of PVC and pretty much based our design on this one. Measurements - "About that long": Things will differ depending on the truck you're placing this in. Our truck had a liner and the liner with a pre-made slot for a vertical 2x6, I think you could use a 2x4 as well.

We decided to add a horizontal 2x4 under the 2x6 creating a more stable L-shape bottom brace. Originally we thought we would use 2 2x4s on the top of the rack for a broader resting spot for the canoe. That's why the vertical 2x4 posts are the orientation they are in the design.

But as the evening got later we decided that was not needed. Measurements were useful because instead of working outside in the dark we drilled the holes in the shop where we had a drill press available. The design drawing shown here was done with AutodeskD an online 3D drawing tool.
