Boat Trailer Brakes: Surge vs. Electric-over-Hydraulic - Boat Trader Blog Dec 09, Question. Every trailer Ive ever pulled has had either no brakes or electric brakes, with the exception of my boat trailer which has drum type surge brakes. So although Ive been pulling it for almost 6 years its the only experience I have with surge brakes. I dont feel like they do much but I. All the Surge Brake Actuators below are designed for Straight 3 inch wide trailer tongues. They are Bolt on assemblies. Surge Brake actuators are manufactured specifically for either Hydraulic Disc, or Hydraulic Drum Brakes. The difference between the two designs lies in the Master Bass Boat Trailer Surge Brakes Function Cylinder. Use long strokes under the actuator to bleed the brakes. Open the bleeder valve and let fluid drain into container. Close the bleeder valve once no more air is present before the other person lets go of the push rod. Release the pushrod and bracket.

As a result of this forward force, the surge actuator slides. This sliding motion activates the motion cylinder, which builds pressure in the brake fluids, causing the trailer to slow down. In other words, you can say that the harder you brake your primary vehicle, the harder the surge brakes present in the trailer boat will take effect. Trailer boats come installed with an emergency breakaway system. These systems are deemed mandatory under federal law.

In other words, it is a system to make sure that if your trailer ever detaches from your primary vehicle, it can hopefully cause no damage to anyone else. The system is basically a cable or chain attached to your primary vehicle used to tow the trailer and the surge actuator in the trailer on the other end. However, while this safety feature has its perks, it can sometimes activate quite unnecessarily. There are many scenarios where this can occur.

It is quite normal to unintentionally activate the brakes or even rip the chain off in such cases. In cases where you see the chain left intact, it is relatively easy to reset the surge brakes. All you have to do is push the chain back into its place or reset the handle. That is all in most cases. In cases where you do not see the chain, you must install a newer chain before resetting the surge brakes.

It is not necessarily an expensive procedure. You may not even have to visit a professional! There are many articles out there that show precisely how to change the chain step by step. All you have to do is to maintain the system from time to time simply.

The main areas of maintenance are usually brake lines, brake pads, and brake fluid levels. Other than that, while your surge brakes are very trustworthy, it is better to avoid speeding, for prevention is always better than cure. It is always good to check brake fluid levels if none of the brakes are working correctly. It is better if you replace the wheel and master cylinders when there is no brake fluid. No fluids can lead to rusting. You can check the brake line for blockage Bass Boat Trailer Wiring Harness Online by disconnecting it at one end and making someone pump the master cylinder using the lever.

If the brake fluid flows through fine, there is no blockage. Your surge breaks are what makes your journey. To keep your boat safe throughout your journey, it is better to have a level of understanding of how your brakes work. Since the breaks operate automatically, they can activate unintentionally in some cases. It is better to know your brakes and the methods to reset them, just in the event of an unlikely even triggering your emergency surge breaks. Surge breaks will definitely keep the boat behind the truck where it belongs Don't disable them!

I didn't notice it until I pulled into a gas station and tried to backup. With the brakes disabled it was a total different story. I would maintain the surge brakes. The brakes only engage when stopping as the trailer coupler moves foreward. The drum adjustments compensates for brake shoe wear not engagement travel. When you must stop fast brakes assist the vehicle reducing stopping distance in a emergency and that is when you need them. Thanks for the replies! Gonna get them back to properly functioning order.

Wheel cylinders are trash. Look like they have been for some time. Once I pulled the little rubber dust protectors off that became obvious. All pretty simple, worst part is gonna be cleaning all the crap out of assembly. Brakes on trailers are good for falling into disrepair. On the farm, I can't tell you how many times I've had to go through brakes on a trailer that sat. I still have all my drum brake tools, but I don't know if I'll ever use them again; I haven't had them on a vehicle I've owned I 2 decades or so.

If you really don't like drum brakes or surge brakes, for that matter, there are conversion kits. I helped a friend put on a Carslile activator on a cargo trailer, and he wishes he'd done it years ago.

The install wasn't too bad, the worst part for us was making the flange for the brake lines going into the activator. His brake lines were the hardest stainless I've come across. At the end of the day, I guess it depends on what you want to put in it. CountryboyinDC that thought has crossed my mind.

Good to know it was worth the effort. You said cargo trailer, so was that a cargo trailer with surge drum brakes converted to electric actuator or was that a drum to disc conversion with electric actuator? Just curious. It had surge drum brakes originally, and at the end had electric over hydraulic drum brakes.

You sound like you're going to be doing a fair amount of work on the stock drum brakes. If the axle's something common like Dexter, the conversion to disc brakes may not be so much more than putting on new shoes, replacing rusted parts, turning the drums, etc. The drums and shoes are actually in pretty good shape once I got it cleaned up. That's good the OEM brake parts aren't too expensive, I was imagining them setting you back a bit.

The electric over hydraulic setup is nice as are disc brakes, but as they say, if it ain't broke You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.
