Don't have the scratch right now for marine grade wood. I can get some AB though for almost half price. I want it to last more than a year though. If I could get a couple of years out of it then build a better one out of marine grade that would be great. Look at it like a practice boat. Also I wouldnt put anything more than a trolling motor on it. Re: simple jon boat. I'm doing it right now. It's basically a 20' jon. From what I have read around it works better than the ABX fir because of Homemade Wooden Jon Boat Noodle the pine not checking as bad.

I'm glassing the bottom and epoxy coating the inside and outside. Years ago I built an 8' dinghy to get out to my moored sailboat. Since it was left down at the harbor and subject to theft, I built it out of regular AC ply instead of the expensive stuff. I fiberglass taped the seams but other then that, it was just painted with oil based house paint. The dinghy lasted just fine for the four years I owned it and it went to the new owner of the sailboat when I sold it.

I was also a carpenter by trade and now have built 17 boats over the years. Very early on, though, I realized I was not a marine architect. The one boat I designed looked pretty hideous. You might want to search out simple ply designs rather then risking a lot of frustration. Then again, there were no computer programs to help me way back then Mark O.

Divorces are really tough, but I promise you it gets better. The other additional considerations I would have about using ext plywood would be if the additional epoxy it soaked up came close to the cost of the better wood. Thanks for the replies. This is only going to be a 12 or 14 ft boat.

Depending on if I want to trailer it or put it in the back of my pickup. I'm going to try and plan the purchase of the wood on the same day we split up our animals as they have all been undressed my care since she split and that's going to be hard.

Join Date Jun Posts To respond to your original question, absolutely! I've spent thousands of hours in that pram, and if I said how many fish I've hooked you wouldn't believe me Another obsessed fly fisherman here. First of all, there are different grades of Marine plywood. Okume is the most common, but Meranti is also good stuff, and it's definitely cheaper. I haven't used it in a while, so I can't say exactly what it goes for per sheet.

It is still more expensive than construction plywood. However, if you used miranti, you could skip the fiberglass altogether, and I wouldn't be surprised if you saved money. Epoxy isn't cheap. It's worth pricing out both ways. I'd feel more comfortable with well painted marine plywood and no glass.

As long as you paint it, it'll make a very long lasting boat. I've done plenty of fishing out of an aluminum jonboat, and they are the first boat I ever rowed. The standard jonboat is dead straight and flat on the bottom, and the back end is submerged.

This is fine with a little more power. But if you're only ever going to use a trolling motor, then you'll never get the boat on plane, and it makes no sense to have a boat designed specifically for planing. If I were you, I'd put a bit of rocker in the back so that the transom sits up out of the water. This will allow the boat to slip along at low speeds much more efficiently. This means much less water disturbance, and less spooked fish.

It also means that you won't give yourself a heart attack if you ever find yourself rowing. Search Advanced Search. Personal Watercraft for Sale View All. Liked it? Share it! Facebook Twitter.
