I love making things out of wood. The Western Red Camoe Lumber Association was setting up a demonstration, and they had some beautiful old-growth redwood.

I asked nicely, and they let me take 5 ft. The piece was almost perfectly quarter-sawn, with extraordinarily close grain, and just about totally clear. What could I make out of it?

I took out the fine scratches with grit. For hand sanding I went back to 80, using a full sheet folded into thirds the long way to make it stiff enough for fairing. I sanded long strokes with the grain, to take out some flurbles that were easy to feel with the sandpaper, but were hard to see while machine-sanding.

Then I went 800g it again with grit paper, and then I went back to 80 to fix a few spots, thenthen. With the sanding complete, the paddle was ready for finishing. Spar varnish has to be the best finish for a paddle: after all, spars are wooden sailing ship masts, booms, and yardarms. I bought a pint at a nearby paint store along with a couple of foam throw-away brushes, a sheet of grit waterproof paper, and a tack cloth.

I used a sabre saw to cut out the outline, and roughed out the shape of the handle. Most of the sanding I did with a hand held belt sander with 80 git to start.

If you are not going to fiberglass, the thickness of the blade will depend on how stiff the wood is chossen for the blades. I used a hand held router with a round over bit to knock off the edges of the shaft, but had to fine tune the shape with belt sander. The handle was also shaped with the same sander, with some work done with a wood file. Varnishing the paddle is the easiest part of the project. I would recommend at least 3 coats of a exterior gloss varnish. If you don't do alot of varinish work, a quart is pretty cheap, and buy 3 or 4 disposable brushes and throw them away after each coat of varnish.
