Need your advice. I searched forum but all responses that i find are pretty dated. GOing to Greece in August and still debating what islands to visit. Decided to stay for on Naxos for a week instead of island hoping but would like to do many day trips. SInce it is a hot season i would like to book all trips ahead of time.
I also would like to visit Santorini for a day. Ferry is not an option as the earliest ferry from Naxos departures too late For day excursions organised excursions will give you better time to explore the island s you are visiting rather than spending time on sea on a sailboat. Organised tours are done by Naxos Star and Alexander respectively. You can buy tickets from any travel agency in Naxos town. Don't think you will enjoy the trip with 6 beaufort ;. They give you sufficient time to see the destinations. Kristinaki is absolutely correct don't book ahead. Wait till you get there and get a weather report. The Naxos Star in particular get bounced around pretty good on a rough day. The Alexander is almost twice as broad and is somewhat more stable. Yes i also recommend check the weather before going with them, the boats Alexander and Naxos star are not that big and are no fun in rought weather, they have excursions dayli except Saturdays Saturdays they are running charter for scandinavian tour operator from Santorini.
I am here on Naxos now and looked into the Santorini one-day excursions. As mentioned above, there are two boats. I booked the Naxos Star. It left at and, then picked up more passengers in Piso Livadi, Paros at and we arrived at Santorini around The bus was waiting and it took us to Oia for minutes, and then to Fira for about 3 hours.
We left at on the bus to go back to the boat, and left around 5 or so. By the time we arrived in Naxos it was pm. It was a long day, but well worth it if you want to get a feeling for Naxos. I'm very happy I did it. Yesterday there were three cruise ships that had disengorged their passengers for Santorini sight-seeing, and it seemed like every single one of them was in Oia.
Is one "locked in" to the excursion bus for the Santorini day trip after arrival, or is it possible to make one's own arrangements for the day after arrival at the ferry dock? We are Naxos Star Excursion Boat 00 less interested in Fira and Oia the two main destinations on the bus tour than we are Akrotiri, which appears to be not far from the Athinios ferry landing once you get to the top of the caldera cliff , so I am wondering if we can hire a taxi or rent a car at the landing and visit Akrotiri on our own. If we have time, we might even try to squeeze in Pyrgos as well-the views of the island from there appear to be very good.
My guess is that this is not a problem, but I thought I would ask just in case. Thank you all for your recommendations. We did a day tour on naxos star. Like you said - long ferry ride, super crowded island but I am glad we did it.
Long day but the views are unforgettable. Also it made me appreciate naxos even more - more authentic, not too crowded, gorgeous beaches, super nice locals, still beatiful views, cheap etc ; you are not "locked in", you can most definitely do your own stuff.
Just be aware of the traffic and crowd and manage your time. Have a great time!!! Natasha, thanks so much for the feedback-it sounds like we should have no problem making our own arrangements as long as we are back at the dock in time so we don't miss the return ferry. I suspect we will have the same feeling about Naxos , but we feel compelled to at least try to visit Santorini while in "the neighborhood".
We are also considering that one either in addition to, or in place of, Santorini , mainly for the time on Delos. Relative to Delos, there are a few day sailing ships in Naxos harbor that offer day sails to Naxos one includes Rineia -did you have a chance to check any of those options on your visit? We didn't do Mykonos. Just didn't have much interest to spend another day on a ferry ;. Honestly the best day we had on naxos. We went with captain panos. It was an amazing fun relaxing day.
